Literacy work

We have been preparing for our class camp at Arthur's Pass during literacy. One of the DLO's is a hypothermia information pack and then the link is for my heat exhaustion writing. Did you know that when you get hypothermia you feel hot even though your cold and when you get heat exhaustion you feel cold when you are really hot.

Paralympic Choices

This week and during lock down we had to chose a few things to do of a choice board to do with the Paralympics. I chose to do the host poster from another year of the Paralympic games I chose Rio because I think it is a really cool place. The other one I chose was the one about explaining to people what boccia is. I hope you love this post :)

Oona's Story

This week we had to create a story on Oona's perspective until where we are up to now in the story running wild.

Oona’s Story Hi, my name is Oona and I am an elephant that gives rides on the sandy beaches of indonesia. Today there was just something about the sea that I didn’t like at all. I didn’t even go for my morning swim that I usually love so much. I just wasn’t going to take any chances with that water today. Today I had this really kind kid called Will riding me. He looked a little worried trying to get up onto me and when he was up he still held on to the rail very tightly he waved goodbye to his mother and we were off.

I loved these walks even though I did the same everyday I guess I just loved imagining what the kids' faces would be like as they rode me. We were about to turn around when I saw something way out on the horizon, something that no'one else could see a tsunami was coming. That was when I knew we had to go as far away from this very beach as possible.

I suddenly sprinted. I felt a little bad because Will, the boy that was riding me, nearly fell off at first but then he managed to get back up which I was very glad about. He was also probably wondering what I was doing as I suddenly ran into the jungle which was probably a bit scary for him. I just knew that the longer we walked along that beach the more danger we would be in. I ran for what seemed like days and nights while WIll was either sleeping or slapping my neck asking for food and water. Trust me I would get him food but only when we were a safe distance away.

One day when I was just walking we I came across a stream that had no crocodiles which was good so I decided to lie down in the middle so Will could get out and have a big drink of water. He must have been asleep or something because I ended up waiting there for quite some time. Well, it seemed like a very very long time. Finally I felt the wait of Will come off my back and saw WIll swimming across the stream to the other side where he sat and drinked for a long time and really wanted to play with him so I completely submerged myself under the water, the best hide and seek spot ever isn’t it?

He got very grumpy at me. I don’t know why I was just playing. I think he thought that I had just left him so I decided to pop my head back up to the surface to see what he was doing. He looked quite surprised that I had just been trying to play with him and he actually started playing with me which was really fun.

We started walking again and I picked some figs from high up on the branches and gave them to Will. He was really grateful. I ate some too of course but mainly just leaves and twigs.

We walked for a few more hours when I heard a snap of a branch and an orange and black striped shadow emerged into the clearing where we were both standing. It was a tiger. I had had many encounters with these creatures before so I was not worried. WIll probably was though. I said to the tiger to go away and leave us alone or I will stamp on you and you will cry in pain. Guess what he actually went away which is very cool I felt pretty cool too.

Tsunami Writing

This week during lock down we had to do a task on what it would of been like to be on the beach when the tsunami came and how you would feel. We have started a book called running wild and it is about a boy who is on an elephant when a tsunami comes on to the beach that he is riding on. This book is really good so far so maybe you could read it one day. Hope you enjoy it :)

Fold out picture art

This is my fold out picture art. It is really fun because you fold it a certain way that we you open it you draw on it more and it looks like it has a huge open mouth. I chose this cute backpack fold out picture to try but their were way more to chose from. It looks like a normal school bag but then when you open it its a scary school bag monster.

A moment in time

Last week in Ruma Whitu the Wai girls literacy group had to complete a journal response for one of the two moments in time on the left. This task was really fun because you got to think about how to write particular phrases into a journal form. I really enjoyed this task! Hope you like it :)

New Ending Hana

This week during literacy we had to create a new ending for one of the characters in refugee. I really enjoyed doing this task because I love writing. This is the finished story of Hana I hope you like it. :)

Hana

At the start of my story I will tell you that Me and my family are drowning. That word is going to be part of my history for a long time because that was the last time I saw my family well. That was what I thought would happen.

We heard a motor coming our way. It sped past but Mahmoud, my big brother, grabbed on and begged for them to take me so I would not drown. After a while they agreed and that was the last time I saw my mothers lovely caring face. The boat that they had given me sped away and that was when the lady that was holding me started singing a lullaby. My eyes slowly closed while she was singing and she was stroking my hair.

Fish swam past my face as I dreamed about my pet goldfish that we had to leave behind but in this dream he was swimming alongside me in the water, protecting me from all of the things that I had not yet seen. That dream was one of the best dreams I ever had but sadly it didn’t last long because soon enough I was waking up.

When I opened my eyes the lady that had been holding me was lying beside me. Suddenly I noticed that we were on land, yes we were on land. I tried to yell out in joy but all that came out of my chubby face was goo goo gaga. It was devisting that I was still a baby and couldn’t say anything. The lady said that the others had dropped us off here and then they had sped away and yes it meant that we were all alone.

That night the lovely lady made a big hut and lined it with ferns and then she lit a fire to cook some fish that she had caught. To be honest I didn’t know how she did it but somehow she did. The night went smoothly and so did the many years that we had been living there. I am 9 now and I have learnt how to survive in the wilderness and I have learnt how to catch a good looking fish as well which is pretty awesome.

I also learnt that the kind lady's name was Amelia and now I just called her mum because I didn’t really remember my other mother that much which was sort of sad. LIfe went really well from then on. We added more onto our hut and it started to get so big that some rooms had nothing in them. My room was by far the best. I had the best bed made from flax and moss. It is SOOO comfy. We made a little kitchen which had things like a fire, a big rock slab for a bench and then wooden cutlery that I made and big leaves that we used for plates.

That is pretty much all of my story that I have to tell because to be honest my story was pretty good except that I didn’t know if my family were still alive or had drowned in the middle of the deep dark ocean!

I did it with my friend Casey so go make sure to check out her blog as well I loved doing this because I learnt heaps of history of whaling and just stuff about whales and whaling. I hope you like it!

Letter

This week in ruma whitu for literacy our task was to make a letter to our whanau telling them some things that we know about refugees and how we can help and so on on. I really enjoyed this activity because you get to write this really interest but still a little funny, letter it was so much fun. We are getting further and further into the book refugee and the book is getting really really good. Hope you enjoy!

Dearest Mother & Father I hope you are going alright because I am doing great. I am learning heaps about refugees and even about the toiletries they had to use on the boats (hint they don’t have any) and I will tell you they weren’t very clean and disinfected, instead they were probably Infected with some sort of virus. Luckily that isn’t all I am going to tell you because that would be extremely boring wouldn’t it. Anyway let's get onto it!
Why do people become refugees, you ask me?
People becoming refugees is totally up to themselves of course even though you probably knew that. Becoming a refugee means that you have to leave your war torn country. They usually leave in the dead of night unless they are stupid then they would leave during the day and probably get shot while trying.

Which countries do NZ refugees come from?
Why? People come to New Zealand from many different countries but I know that one of those countries is Poland because they made a children's camp in Wellington, isn't that the place where you live so cool. The children's camp was for all of those kids whose parents were fighting or the kids that have no parents guess what they are called orphans.

What can we do to help?
One thing that we can do to help refugees is stop fighting because when you think about it all you get out of it is the lovely feeling of killing people which still isn’t very lovely is it anyway so people think it is, Not me of course but other people like Hitler for example. That killer of a man is a mean person that gets pleasure from killing people. Another thing to add is that you can donate food online to help all human beings have food to fill their stomachs and their families.

Why should we help? We need to help these refugees because they have such a hard life and we need to help them get to a safer country or have enough food and water to feed their families. Helping our refugees is probably one of the most important things in our world because I assure you most countries have one or two refugees that live there so we need to keep helping them to make our world a better place. I also have to say that we have them here in New Zealand. Thank you very much.

What local organisations do we have to help?
I completely have know Idea what organisations we have to help but I definitely think that salvation army would probably be a helping organisation because people give them their old stuff that is still in good condition and the workers bring the price down a little so it is more affordable for their customers which is a really good idea. Well I think that it is anyway.

 How can refugees help us?
I think that refugees can help us as well because whatever country they come from probably has a different culture and may have a different language so when they come here to New Zealand we learn heaps of new things about their culture and their unique languages which is pretty interesting to learn. That is what I have been learning this year

From Emma

Refugee

This my think and respond that I worked on for the book called refugee it was really run and I loved filling in the think and respond format. Hope you enjoy

This is my emotive language slide that we also had to do while we were reading the book called refugee. We had to make all the sentences better and way more emotive. Hope you enjoy

Polish Child Refugee

This week we had to make a story of what it would be like to be coming into New Zealand as a refugee. I really enjoyed writing mine because I think it has a great time line and it is really amusing though there are a few very sad parts but they are not that bad.  The book called refugee is a really good book so you could have a look at one day. Hope you enjoy!

My name is Daria and I have lived in Poland all my life. I had never travelled out of Poland in my life. I am 14 years old and I am about to tell you my story and the terrible things that happened here in the past and the good things that happened when we went off to a children's camp in Wellington (New Zealand). So sit back and relax as I tell you my good but also bad and terrible experiences in my life story.

May 3 1944

MY family was one of those families that were struggling to even get food onto our table. Every day we only had about one serve of food and when we did have food to eat it never was enough to live off. One day my father Filip went off to work to get some money for the food while my mother stayed at home when me and my other two siblings were not yet old enough to go to school. That night my father did not come back from work. I did not yet know that that would have been the last time I saw my warm hearted father. The next day on the radio we heard that there had been a significant shooting that the Nazis were behind. They had gone to my fathers work and got everyone to stand in a long line and one by one the workers got shot, including my poor helpless father.

June 14 1944

Suddenly when we were all in our beds going to sleep BANG! CRASH! The Nazis had bombed peoples houses all around the street including ours. Mommy!, I heard both my siblings cry at the same time. If you are wondering, they are twins and their names are too long and boring for me to remember so I just call them my siblings or Twins. Great names aren’t they. Anyway that's enough of that. Twins come over here I yelled as I tried to find them in the smoke. Finally I found them and I got them safely outside but where was my mother oh no I cried she must still be in there stay there I told the twins as I plunged into the flames to find my mother. After a few minutes I found my mother and carried her in my arms out of the burning house and onto our lawn. Mum please wake up she coughed and sputtered and then she opened her eyes and said please Daria look after the twins and say to them that I love them. Her breathing stopped and I realised that she had just died right here and right now.

July 1 1944

We had all been told that all of us kids were going to be taken to a country where they would live in a children's camp and be safe forever so they thought. We all boarded the boats at 6am on the 1st of july. Soon enough they were on their way with all of the tiny little dingy to the safety of New Zealand. Most of the children were orphans whose parents had died or been killed and they were so happy to be going to a new country and being safer kids. Some of the children got incredibly sea sick. We tried to give them food but it eventually got vomited up and those poor kids ended up dying because the food that they were eating was staying in their body long enough. To see the people that I had actually made friends with die in the middle of the big scary ocean was quite sad and also worrying because I thought I might be next. In the distance I see hills, lots and lots of green bushy hills where I heard somebody exclaim and they were right, we were heading straight to the shores of New Zealand.

July 2 1944

We got of the boats and their waiting for us was a beautiful big train the adults that had come here with us told us to grab our things which was only really a few clothes and go hope into the train and find yourself and two more others if you wise a cabin that you will travel to wellington in is that clear, YES I heard all the kids yelling as they hurried over to the train to find the best cabin for them and a few mates. The train chugged away from the station and drove through lovely forests as green as the grass across fast flowing beautiful blue rivers as blue as the sky and up on the tops of the beautiful winding hills as tall as giraffes. It was the beautiful sight that I had seen in my whole entire life. I could see that I was not the only one looking out the windows because I could see that all of us polish children were staring out of the window at the beautiful countryside that New Zealand had to offer. We passed through little towns and villages and were greeted by young kids and adults waving to us and holding banners saying WELCOME TO NEW ZEAlAND. As we drove through the countryside there were animals that I had never seen before like Deer, Sheep, Cows and pukekos. I knew that these animals were probably also in Poland but I had never seen them because I lived in a big city not in the countryside. Well maybe not pukekos but everything else.

July 5 1944

We arrived at the children's camp on the 5th of july everybody was so excited that they would be safe forever. Well that is what they thought anyway. The children's camp was massive; it had rows and rows of little houses that she shared with two other girls. They ate in a huge hall lined with heaps of long tables and chairs. We got three meals a day and they were not actually that bad for a children's camp. We did school because they had turned one of the houses into a learning space. We usually learned more stuff about our home poland and then we also learned a little bit of New Zealand stuff and learnt some of their cool language. The camp had a huge field for all of us kids to play in and a little kids playground for the really young kids that came here. Every night I used to go to sleep straight away because there was no chaos and dream about the beautiful tree top birds.

Refugee

This week in Ruma Whitu we have been reading from chapters 11-15 of the incredible book called refugee. For one of the tasks we had to write next chapter of one of the characters in the book. I chose Isabel because I think that her story is definitely the best in my opinion and it is really easy to understand what she is talking about in each paragraph. Refugee is such a good book maybe you could have a read of it one day!

Refugee

This is my think and respond that I did this week in Ruma Whitu. Think and respond is sometimes quite challenging because you have to find evidence to support your answer or statement which is sometimes pretty hard. We do think and respond every week to see if we still remember what we read and to tell other people what we have read. The book refugee is very cool! Maybe you could have a read one day.

Dragon Maths

At school we do heaps of dragon maths! This is page 85 of book 5, some parts of this page were very challenging but I asked for help and completed it in the set time frame! For some of the questions you needed to measure the distance from one place to another which was really fun. Hope you like it!!!

Refugee

In class we are doing heaps of activity's based on the book refugee. This is one of our activity's it is called think and respond we had to put heaps of evidence into our activity so it is more believable for the reader. The book refugee is based on three kids who are refugee's. It's so good you should have a read of it one day. Hope you like it!

Refugee

This week we had to read chapters 6-10 in the book refugee this is one of the activity's that we had to complete. It is a character traits google drawing it was quite fun. If both of your characters had one of the same traits you had to put a circle over it to be easier to see that they are the same words. I am loving reading the book refugee at the moment so maybe you could have a look at it.

In class we have been doing work around all about me.

I worked with my friend Casey on a wanted poster about two crazy people on the left is me and on the right is my friend Casey.

I also did a padlet entry for a 'who am I' which was really really fun. I feel like I made mine way too obvious but anyway.

I also did a google drawing with heaps of pictures that relate to me. This was real cool maybe you could try it one day.

Waitangi Day

We are learning about the Treaty Of Waitangi and Waitangi Day and why it is celebrated. It was signed in the Bay of Islands February 6th 1840. The Treaty of Waitangi is a very important document even though there were a few fights around it. I am really enjoying learning about it and I have learned a lot of stuff about it as well.
